The return of the Doctor Who franchise more than exceeded the wildest dreams of its fans. Besides actually having a budget to work with, the new Doctor Who has excellent writing and acting as well. The Doctors of old were good actors, but they didn't have the depth of writing and a solid budget to support the show. Christopher Eccleston was a marvelous choice as the new Doctor, and got us all hooked on this series with his fantastic humor. When they chose David Tennant to replace him, we felt the Doctor had truly come into his own. Tennant brings the character to full bloom with humor, wit, charm that makes us all wish we could travel with him in the TARDIS. We find ourselves waiting breathlessly for his next adventure. One of our favorite episodes so far has been Family of Blood, when the Doctor makes the decision to become human, falls in love and when the situation demands he return to being the Doctor, he struggles with the idea because it means he must leave the woman he loves and go back to being the last Time Lord.

The new Doctor Who series aired on March 26, 2005 in the UK and March 17, 2006 in the US with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper as the leads. Christopher Eccleston completed his contracted 15 episodes, and then was replaced with David Tennant. The first episode featuring the Tenth Doctor was The Parting of the Ways, when the Ninth Doctor transforms into the Tenth Doctor. This episode aired on June 18, 2005. Billie Piper was eventually replaced as the Doctor's companion with Freema Agyeman. While the original Doctor Who series has been running off and on since 1963, the current incarnation has been running for four seasons so far.  The show uses multiple directors and writers, although Russell T. Davies plays a large part in both capacities. Like the original Doctor Who, the Doctor, last of the Time Lords, travels through time and space saving humanity and the Universe from destruction. He takes a Companion with him on these adventures.

Doctor Who was played by Christopher Eccleston for 15 episodes, and then was replaced by David Tennant. Both men played the Doctor with humor and wit, bringing the reputation of this show from a joke to one of the best on television. Rose Tyler, the Doctor's Companion, was played by Billie Tyler, and she became almost as popular as the Doctor himself. Eventually, she did leave the show and was replaced by Freema Agyeman, who plays Martha Jones. She is due to be replaced by Catherine Tate, who will play Donna Noble, the newest of the Doctor's Companions.

Reviews have been generally good. The New York Times said, "Like so much British science fiction, especially Douglas Adams's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series, this "Doctor Who" has a goofy, homemade quality; it's less interested in gizmos than in characters."  Fans have embraced the new series, sharing comments like, "The Doctor has also matured, from a lucky bumbler, past Eccleston's "edgy" and angry doctor. He's more mature, his history and internal feeling are more of the story line, yet he keeps the boyishness we expect from the Doctor. He's deeper without being too mature, and that's refreshing."
